Helping Needle-Shy Horses

Finding the right person to help you with your needle-shy horse is critical.

Horses develop needle-shyness as a direct result of feeling undue pain or stress when receiving an injection. Unfortunately, a horse can develop needle-shyness after as little as one scary experience. Left untreated, this strong fear can persist for life. Applying certain training techniques can greatly worsen the problem or create new ones. Having seen the heartbreak this fallout can cause both horses and people, we created the Needle Shy Horse team and program.

Needle-shyness in horses is the same sort of issue as needle-phobias in people. The techniques recommended by professionals to address these strong fears are unique. They involve exposure to the injection process, in small, gradually increasing ‘doses’ that don’t trigger fear. This allows the brain to relearn that injections aren't dangerous, and can be safely tolerated.

Professionals who specialize in treating needle-phobias in people include counsellors, psychologists, and psychiatrists. Professionals who specialize in addressing needle-shyness in horses include horse behaviour consultants, clinical and applied animal behaviourists, and veterinary behaviourists.

The team at Needle-Shy Horses are all qualified equine professionals. They have the specialized training and hands-on, practical experience needed to teach you how to help your needle-shy horse, kindly and effectively.
